Garloond is a dragon commander in charge of the 5th Dragon Order of Kestrel Weyr. He is the son of Ser, also of Kestrel. He is a distinguished military commander, one of great skill and strategic prowess, and also unique among his peers being the youngest to ever hold the title of commander of an order in the entire history of the Dragon Corps.

Overview

Garloond was born several decades after the great dragon rebellion and grew up in the sheltering halls of Kestrel Weyr. In his youth he was a brash, irresponsible, reckless young dragon who often got himself into trouble, much to the chagrin of his parents. Especially Ser, his father. Much was done to try and straighten him out and make him behave more maturely than he had been. However, one day, that all changed, as he and his friends were out "joy flying" and horsing around in the skies to the east of Kestrel rather than joining their peers in learning the ways of the Dragon Order. It was during this time that, while horsing around in the skies, that he failed to notice an approaching controller shuttle and inadvertently and unintentionally collided with it, damaging the shuttle so badly that it crashed in the forest below. While Garloond wasn't hurt, and the controllers themselves weren't anymore concerned about the crashed shuttle than to make mention of it to the Weyr Master of Kestrel at the time, the fallout within the Weyr on Garloond himself that resulted from this changed his life forever.

The fear of what could've happened so terrified him that, from that day forward, he cast aside his childish ways and poured every ounce of his being into not only being the best dragon and warrior that he could be, but also the best commander that all of Offworld had ever known. And, in a mere century and a half he did just that, he completed all of his required Ackrays in record time, doing what most other dragons would consider impossible, and not only earning the title of commander, but also command of an entire Dragon Order, a feat that, by itself, was difficult enough. But to do it at such a young age, and beat out commanders with far more experience than him, who were two and three times his age, was an accomplishment for the history books. However, this wasn't a promotion he'd received out of favor, as that's not something he would accept. He would only agree to such an honor if he'd earned it, because he wanted his promotion to the command of an entire order to be more than just who he knew. He wanted it to be because of who he was, and what he had done.

In time, and several years after receiving his promotion to Commander of the 5th order, during a routine patrol to the east of Kestrel, he encounters both Simon's Team, and also a beautiful powder blue colored dragonness named Magendra Tallenon, whom he immediately takes a liking to, although he refuses to admit it. Even so, over the following months their relationship grows rapidly to the point where they willingly and graciously trade King Feathers with one another, indicating that their relationship had gone from merely professional, to something far more, and far, far deeper.

Notable Achievements and Historical Impacts

  1. The youngest dragon ever to achieve the rank of Commander (equivalent to Colonel) in all of Dragon Corps history. This amazing feat was achieved in his 295th year. The previous dragon to hold this record was 500 years old when he assumed the rank of Commander.
  1. His rise to greatness was spawned by an incident when he was a young dragon in which he was out flying with a group of his friends. They were horsing around and not paying attention, causing him to inadvertently fly into the path of an oncoming self piloted cargo shuttle and collide with it, causing the shuttle to crash. The fallout from this incident, and the incredible chastisement he received by both the Syndicate and the weyr elders, motivated him to strive for excellence and to be the best dragon he could ever be.
  1. The shuttle that he collided with, that crashed in the forest in the territory of Kestrel Weyr, while considered lost and unsalvageable by the controllers, was not actually a total loss, as the cargo it was carrying survived the crash intact and unharmed, as did some critical components of the shuttle itself. These items were later salvaged by a group of locals who, having no use for it themselves, sold them to Subton, who quickly set about finding ways to use them in their city. Ultimately though, much of the technology and cargo that was recovered from the crashed shuttle was put to use in three of their submarines. The rest was set aside to be studied in an attempt to reverse engineer the controller technology in hopes of some day replicating it.
