Rupert Wendle is the leader of a band of five racers who became trapped in the fifth hextant and found themselves unwilling, and unable to continue for a variety of reasons. Working to free themselves, Rupert and his team, along with a number of other trapped racers, and even a handful of rebellious biomechanoids, who have turned against their masters, work together to try and put in place everything they will need in order to complete the race and win it.

Overview

Rupert, a young man studying to be an accountant, along with his teammates, were brought to the planet of Offworld and forced to complete together in The Race of Offworld while helping each other survive along its long, and treacherous path. Eventually, after several years of struggle, the team arrived in the fifth hextant and briefly remained there to enjoy its riches and delicacies. However, realizing that stay would be too dangerous, as they might become addicted to the many pleasures found there in that land, they struck out for the sixth hextant, and the Black Mountain. Unfortunately, their first attempt to scale its formidable heights failed, forcing them to return to the 5th hextant to resupply and try again. They tried several more times, but ultimately failed every time. Eventually they gave up trying and chose to remain in the fifth hextant, and soak in its many riches, delicacies, and pleasures. Over time they went from simply indulging in them, to being completely enslaved by their pleasures. In time, due to this, the controllers took them as pleasure slaves, and were forbidden from leaving its borders and completing the race.

At first they resisted this offer, and were immediately stripped of everything, and access to all the pleasures of the fifth hextant. Eventually, given in to the suffering of their deprecation, they willingly enslaved themselves to the controllers, and gave into their temptations and offerings. After this, everything that had been taken from them was returned, and they were given humble, yet excellent accommodations within the last city of the fifth hextant, and placed under the leadership and control of Mitch and his subordinates. However, Rupert never gave up, and made a promise to his teammates that they would break free of their imprisonment, and eventually regain their freedom, one way or another, even if it killed them. However, they would have to be smart about it. So they then spend the next fifteen years preparing themselves for that day, while quietly undermining the controllers and their authority in the fifth hextant.

Eventually, while working against Mitch and his subordinates, Rupert meets Simon Williams and his team, and discover, not only Christ (they think they're saved prior to meeting him, but discover this assumption to be wrong, and quickly move to correct it), but their real purpose for being there. Namely, to help and support Simon's team as they make their final push on the Black Mountain and the finish line. It is with all of Rupert's careful and tedious planning that Simon's team is able to make the final fifty mile push through the sixth hextant, and especially the nearly impassable, final ten miles of the course, which is the hardest part of it hands down. Without Rupert's team and his allies, Simon's team would've been unable to reach the end. But, with their help, they're able to get all the way to the end. And, although Rupert isn't the one who wins the race, it's his help, and that of his team, and allies, that make victory possible.
