A Coaxial Drive is an advanced form of Hyperdrive capable of traveling through the subspacial layer of space, facilitating faster than light (FTL) travel. The system is powered by a coaxial generator, from which the drive gets its name, and creates FTL flight by injecting plasma, created by the generator, in sets of nacells which create the necessary conditions to initiate subspacial FTL flight. The generator itself, which creates the plasma also supplies, creates its power by forming an energy look within its core that in turn draws in energy from inter-dimensional space, part of which is fed to the ship, and part of which is recycled through the generator to create more energy through a perpetual or "coaxial" loop. Hence the generator's name as a continuous cycle of give and take is required for it to generate power. Ships equipped with Coaxial Drives tend to be 40% faster than their warp powered counterparts, but suffer from a unique condition that can cause the drive and generator to stall and/or backfeed on itself, causing the generator to explode violently, destroying the ship. The Coaxial Drive, and its companion generator, are used for a time by Earthfleet to power their new Shipkillers, but is later abandoned in favor of the newer, better, faster and more powerful Linear Hyperdrives and Quantum Power Cores, both of which eliminate the issues suffered by the Coaxial Drive.
