A Hyperdrive is an FTL drive system that creates a subspace wormhole through which a ship travels to reach its destination. A hyperdrive is essentially a primitive, unstable warp drive that has been fine tuned to take advantage of this instability and the subsequent wormhole it generates to create FTL travel. However, while Hyperdrive was the faster form of travel for most races in the early days of the galaxy, especially among The Nine Ancient Races, it was later replaced by warp drive when warp drive technology became safer, more stable, faster, and more dependable than hyperdrive.
