A Hyperdrive is an FTL drive system that creates a subspace wormhole through which a ship travels to reach its destination. A hyperdrive gets its FTL capabilities by feeding a hyperactive plasma into a specially designed set of nacelle coils that create an unstable, temporary, and navigable subspace wormhole through which the ship passes, thus creating FTL travel. However, while Hyperdrive was the faster form of travel for most races in the early days of the galaxy, especially among The Nine Ancient Races, it was later replaced by warp drive when that technology became faster, and more dependable than hyperdrive.
