Shumon is the son of Narond, and father of Maggy. His older sister, and his daughter's favorite aunt, is Karuth.
Overview
Shuman is the youngest of Narond's children, and the chief training instructor of Morten Weyr. He's a strict commander, and one who demands 100% from both his students, and his children. In fact, he can be a little overly demanding in some cases. Maggy sees him as being a harsh instructor and overly strict with her. But he does it, not to be overbearing or cruel. He loves all of his children and wants the best for them, including ensuring that they can hold their own and defend themselves any time that he's not around to protect them. He is also Narond's favorite child, and the chosen successor to his father on the day that he dies. Being the youngest, this has caused no small degree of jealousy and contempt from his older siblings, especially Narond's oldest, who feels cheated out of the honor of being the next Weyr Master upon his father's death.
Like his father, Shuman is a pragmatist. Although he lacks Narond's patience and grace, and tends to be a bit impulsive, he is proven to be a great leader, and his extensive skills as a dragon commander are one of the many reasons that Narond chooses him to be his heir as Weyr Master after he passes away. It isn't until he becomes Weyr Master himself that he begins to understand all that his father went through, and the incredible patience required to perform his job, even though he'd slowly taken over much of his father's daily duties, bit by bit, as he grew weaker and more frail over time. But it's not until he has to do everything himself that he finally understands his father's attitude towards leadership.
Shuman's initial election as Narond's successor, however, is not without controversy within the weyr. Many within Morten Weyr initially reject Narond's election of his youngest son as his successor, and seek to find better candidates for the task. However, as time goes by, and the list of qualified individuals slowly grows thin, it soon becomes obvious why Narond has chosen Shuman for the job. Eventually the weyr, albeit reluctantly, accepts Shuman's election as the next Weyr Master, and eventually elect him to replace his father upon Narond's death.
