Karuth is the daughter of Narond, and the elder sister of Shuman, mate of Sundao, and aunt to Magendra Tallenon and Taerieth. She is an expert flier, and one of the best in her weyr, having received professional training from master flier Rathon in her youth. She was instrumental in teaching Maggy how to fly, and helping her become the flight expert that she is today. One special detail about karuth is that she is essentially an "Aunt to the entire weyr" in that she pours herself into every youngling born in the weyr. Her reasons for doing this stem from the very high failure rate of dragon eggs. This is known to cause great grief and heartache in every dragoness in all of Offworld.

Some of them, like Karuth, find creative ways to make up for this, and to cope with this incredible loss that every dragoness has to deal with. Others, like Ophena, Shuman's life mate (aka wife), however, don't handle this grief and loss well, and end up becoming overbearing helicopter parents. Karuth, after having seen others go through this same thing, chose not to go down this path by instead making all the other younglings of the weyr her nieces and nephews by proxy. This extra attention that she pays to the other younglings is welcomed by all of the parents of Morten weyr. However, despite her equal care and concern for all of the other youngings in Morten, her favorite niece is Magendra.

As Magendra was growing up, knowing how overbearing and obsessive Ophena was to her children, Karuth took her under her kindly, familial wing and began to be the type of mom that Magendra didn't have. In doing so, she discovered that Magendra had an incredible aptitude for flying. Discovering this early on, she began to tutor Magendra in the art of flying at a young age, in the style and teachings of Rathon, and turned the young dragoness into the single best flier in Morten, on the same incredible skill level as herself. She is also directly, and sometimes indirectly, responsible for training younglings in the art of flying. Although, her focus is more with teaching the fundamentals, and tutoring those who are struggling, than with long term training and reinforcement. That job falls to the individual dragon commanders once a youngling is fully trained in the art of flight.

Karuth has also had a deep interest in seeing Tarieth become spoken for, as she wishes to see all of her nieces and nephews find their own life mate by any means necessary. However, despite her best efforts, shew as unable to achieve that with Tarieth. To her greatest chagrin, however, it was Magendra who eventually convinced her elder sister to find a life mate, and with the most boring dragon (at least from Magendra's viewpoint) in all of Offworld. Namely, Ahshone. Even so, Karuth was happy, as Tarieth was finally able to find love.
