Ophena is the wife of Weyr Master Shuman, and mother to Magendra Tallenon, Taerieth, and a number of other dragons. She is known as being an overbearing helicopter parent who constantly pries into the lives of her children, and obsesses over them so much that she has become despised by all of her children to the point that they want nothing to do with her if they can at all help it. They still love their father Shuman, despite his hard, almost fiery personality, as his firmness with them is because he loves his children so deeply, and wants the best for them, of which they will all attest to. But it's also to make up for, and somewhat counteract, his wife's poor treatment of them.

This attitude of excessive, and overbearing parenting, constantly inserting herself into the lives of her children in ways that are, while not abusive, certainly questionable and excessive. She has become this way as her method to cope with a rather troubling issue of being a dragon on Offworld. Namely, that only about 1 in 10 eggs are either viable, or actually hatch, and of those that do hatch, only 1 in 5 survive past the age of 5. This proved devastating to Ophena, causing her to turn to the only means she could think of to make up for this continual yearly loss. However, this over-parenting lead to all of her children eventually coming to hate her. However, her sister-in-law Karuth did the opposite, making herself the best possible mom, and aunt, that a young dragon could ever ask for.

When Maggy, Ophena's third child, encountered the same issue in her early egg bearing, she soon came to understand her mother's pain, and began to empathize with her, eventually reaching out to her mother in an effort to heal her, and thus their relationship. And, while her other children didn't immediately seek to do the same thing, they couldn't deny that she was changing, and for the better. This change also greatly pleased Shuman, who himself was growing tired of her behavior. He only remained with her as long as he did because of how much he loved her, even though he didn't know how to fix what was wrong with her.
