Charles Smith is a Lieutenant, and the chief helmsman of the Brayburn Society starship Destiny. He is a tall, well built, imposing man of African descent, and one who is a genius pilot. He's also quite the brawler, and easily twice as strong as most average men. Charles is also one who doesn't take no when something has to be done. However, he's not a mean person. He's just the "get it done" type. His first encounter with Edmond Clayton, during his time after completing his Inductee classes, was when he was asked by Maxwell Conner to take Edmond up for a flight to help acclimate him to flight, and get him used to doing it so he could become a better commander once he was put in charge of the Destiny.

Once he completed his training of Captain Edmond, he then went on to piloting the Destiny through its first mission into space, and its return trip home, as well as for many years after. He eventually gets command of his own Stellar Class starship, and later takes over pilot training after Earthfleet is born. He eventually retires as an admiral.
