Esther is a kindly old widow who lives alone in a run down cottage on her small but ample farm along the racing trail near the city of Forlorian. She is a powerful Christian, despite being the only member of her family still alive. She was born into a large farming family, and then married a giant of a man and raised a large family of her own, only to slowly, one by one, lose all of them to death until she was the only one left. She has no family, no children, or grandchildren alive. Up until she meets Simon's team she's uncertain of what her purpose is in life. But after meeting them, she helps them not once, but twice, even giving them her wagon, her late husband's horse, Bellimeir, and tending to Simon and Yurg's wounds after their unfortunate events in Forlorian, as well as counseling Trevor and other members of the team, and even making the acquaintance of Garloond and Fallon after they rescue Simon and return him to his other team members. Later on, after Simon's team is long gone, she brings Susan Wheaton and her team of travelers under her roof to await the day when they would play an an important and pivotal part in the eventual end of the race.
