Spire is one of a large class of military service droids in use by Earthfleet to fill gaps in their ranks due to personnel shortages. He begins his life aboard the Appalachia serving as her chief engineer, but eventually becomes captain of his own ship, and later the captain of the Prometheus. Despite being an android, he is a very astute and skilled officer, and captain, and proves his mental many times over his many, many decades of faithful service. He even remains as an integral part of the fleet long after other droids like himself are retired from service. Spire most distinguishes himself during the mission involving the alternate dimension, and alternate Earth in the events of Dark Earth.

His personality is very reserved and quiet, but thoughtful. Also, despite being an android, he is loved and respected by his entire crew, and definitely Joel Pendleton, who hires him as the captain of his flagship. Spire also is somewhat unique in how he relates to his subordinates, in that he holds a special empathy for them. Not just because he was programmed that way, but because, through observation and time, he'd studied human behavior, frailties, and more, and learned how to understand and relate to his human counterparts, which is part of why so many people love him, as he doesn't see people as just fleshy animals with attitudes, but rather coequals.
