Sydney Jones is the weapons officer for the Sergenious, and the ship's first officer after Eric Rogers. He is of Australian origin, and the second son of a family of five. His parents were both Inductees, brought into the Brayburn Society at a young age, and later both met, and fell in love while working in the Society labs. Sydney, however, was drawn to military life, and eventually became a tactical officer aboard the Marshall, where he got noticed by Mike Clayton, her then captain. He so impressed Mike that, when he was promoted to Admiral, he specifically took Sydney with him and made him his tactical officer for the Sergenious.

And, while Sydney has never seen much actual combat, his skills as a tactician, and tactical officer, while not as good as Mike's, are definitely some of the best in the fleet, making a LOT of commanders jealous of his being swept up by Mike to serve under him. Sydney eventually, upon the retirement of Mike, leaves fleet service and goes on to first become an instructor in Earthfleet's own officer academy, and later he meets a beautiful older woman (who is almost his same age at this time), and goes on to raise a family, acting as a substitute tactical instructor, and an "officer for rent" as the fleet likes to say of anyone who is prior service, who hires on for certain missions, much as Bob Jakes did, thus gladly giving their exceptional skills over to the fleet on a per need basis, but otherwise preferring to stay home when not needed.
